Career Talk Department of Spatial Planning and Urban Management

The School of Architecture and the Built Environment and the Department of Spatial Planning and Urban Management on 27th May 2017 invited Plan. David Gatimu, the Chief Officer - Lands, Housing and Physical Planning, Kiambu County to give a talk to the students in the school on the underlying issues affecting spatial planning in Kenya in the context of the current dispensation of devolution. He gave his experience in the Kiambu County Government and shared with the students some of the efforts being undertaken by the County Government to ensure that there is sustainable urbanization.
Mr. Gatimu emphasized that the new constitution that came into place in 2010 had created opportunities for planners in the devolved system of governance. He said “Kenya now had a National Spatial Plan, and in line with this, every County is required by law to prepare a County Spatial Plan, and so far only three Counties have prepared such plans.” He added that the Counties were further required to prepare integrated urban strategic plans to guide urban development in the respective counties.
